How to Size a Chandelier: The Designer Formula
Choosing the right chandelier size is one of the most important decisions in room design. A fixture that is too small will look lost against the ceiling, while one that is too large can overwhelm the space.
Interior designers use a simple formula: add the length and width of the room in feet, and the resulting number is the ideal chandelier diameter in inches. This has been the industry standard for decades.
Sizing a Chandelier for a Dining Table
When a chandelier hangs above a dining table, the table width becomes the key measurement. Select a chandelier that is one-half to two-thirds the width of your table for proper proportion and even light distribution.
For rectangular or oval tables longer than six feet, consider using two smaller chandeliers or a linear suspension light.
Hanging Height Guidelines
Over a dining table, the bottom of the chandelier should sit 30 to 36 inches above the table surface. For each additional foot of ceiling height above eight feet, raise the chandelier by three inches.
In entryways and living rooms without a table below, the chandelier should hang at least seven feet above the floor.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I determine the right chandelier size for my room?
Add your room length and width in feet. The sum gives you the ideal chandelier diameter in inches. A 12 by 14 foot room needs approximately a 26-inch chandelier.
How high should a chandelier hang above a dining table?
A chandelier should hang 30 to 36 inches above a dining table. For every additional foot of ceiling height above 8 feet, raise the chandelier 3 inches.
What size chandelier do I need for a dining table?
Choose a chandelier that is one-half to two-thirds the width of your table. A 48-inch wide table works best with a 24 to 32 inch chandelier.
Can a chandelier be too big for a room?
Yes. An oversized chandelier can overwhelm a space. Use the room length plus width formula and stay within 2 to 3 inches of the calculated number.
